collection of super rad black female travelers

If you’re reading this in February, happy Black History Month!!!! If you’re reading this in any other month, HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH!! For decades, the travel and tourism industry has ignored the black community. And black travel bloggers. Because, yanno. Black people don’t travel anyway….right….?? Surely the experts in tourism know a thing or two about the travel demographic.

*cough*

In 2018, black Americans alone spent just about $63 BILLION dollars on tourism. That’s a round trip ticket to the moon – 131, 854 times. The US census is every ten years (so the next one is 2020!), but as of the 2010 census, black Americans (and multiracial individuals) make up 14% of the country’s population.

You can do the math, but that’s a large chunk of travel dollars for roughly 14% of the country. So then…WHERE ARE THEY ALL AT IN THE MEDIA?? I mean, COME ON!!! We have WONI FREAKING SPOTTS, the first (documented) black woman to travel to every country in the world!

From the travel channel to magazine subscriptions, the big screen of travel does not make an effort to reflect black voices. Even in the age of social media, tourism boards and travel companies cycle through the same 4 white influencers.

No offense white influencers.

Not only does this under-representation reinforce the majorly incorrect stereotype that black people don’t/can’t/won’t travel, but it is creating a vacuum of information for black people looking for resources, tips, and experiences. Becky from the burbs isn’t writing blog posts on how to find a black hair stylist in China, okay?? WE NEED BLACK TRAVEL BLOGGERS TOO!

But what about if you’re not black? YALL NEED BLACK TRAVEL BLOGGERS TOO! Diversity is a learning environment. Just because a certain topic might not directly reflect for you in your every day life, it can help you understand and empathize with someone from a different background. It will also help you become a better ally. So help yourself grow, and follow some black travel bloggers.

Where are the Black Travel Bloggers?

How many black travel bloggers do you follow? Go ahead. Even black non-Americans. Name more than 10. Is it because they aren’t being highlighted in mainstream markets? Or is it because you’re not looking hard enough? EITHER WAY – WE ARE GOING TO CHANGE THAT TODAY.

Up your travel game and check out my roundup of the BEST black travel bloggers. It’s 2020, you should know by now the crucial importance of diversity. This list does not include ALL black travel bloggers, but they are my handful of favorites, listed in no particular order. Aside from being specialists in travel, these black travel bloggers are also downright wonderful people. And, so you can make the most informed view of them as possible, I’ve also gotten their favorite go-to movie snack.

How else are you supposed trust their opinion??

**sidenote: I know that there are an incredible amount of Black male bloggers out there, but I just so happen to mostly follow women bloggers – and these are all bloggers that I have a personal connection with. But I will be compiling a list to include male bloggers in the future! In the meantime, feel free to drop your favorite Black male bloggers in the comments!
